In facing his greatest challenge, LeBron James learns the limits of his powers

CLEVELAND There was a metaphor for the Cavaliers situation here in the NBA Finals, and it came in the first quarter of Game 3.

It was almost exactly at the midway point of the first quarter, and LeBron James was caught out of position after a Warriors offensive rebound. James scurried out toward the 3-point line to catch up with his defensive assignment just as Cavs big man Tristan Thompson was crossing the lane. Thompson wasn’t looking and didn’t see his hefty shoulder smack straight into James jaw.

They used that to keep Golden State out of striking distance. The Warriors cut the lead to 37-27 before Draymond Green was called for a technical foul (or so we thought), and that’s when Love put the finishing touches on that first-quarter run with a free throw and one more 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining.
Love finished with a team-high 14 points in a dazzling 49-point quarter. Cleveland shot 14 of 22 from the free-throw line and prompted 12 first-quarter fouls from the Warriors.

After that first quarter, they were only up, what, four points? From the second to the fourth, they only beat us by four points the last three quarters, Durant said. So that first quarter they came out and hit us with that amazing punch; 49 points in the first quarter is way too much.

That first quarter had an outside-in effect. From there, Cleveland set a physical tone, which became one of the leading topics of conversation in the postgame.

NBA Finals 2017: Cavs’ Game 4 win shows near impossibility of winning series against Warriors

Whenever anyone says, All you have to do is the next thing they say is always something impossible.

The above is a truth communicated by comedian Chris Rock while narrating Everybody Hates Chris, the now defunct sitcom loosely based on his childhood. In the episode, young Chris must make Thanksgiving Day macaroni and cheese without, well, macaroni and cheese. His boss at the corner store he worked at told him, You don’t need macaroni and cheese to make macaroni and cheese. All you got to do is…

I want to go on record because I want to be the first one to say this. His record, when he’s done, will be unbreakable, Jefferson said after the game Thursday night.

The veteran Cavs player compared the record to Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak in baseball and Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game as records that will never be broken. He believes James falls under that category because no other player will be able to maintain his level of success in the playoffs.

Whoever tries to get to [James’ record] is going to have to play in 10 NBA Finals and average 30 points a game to get there. Like, let’s put that in perspective. That’s impossible. What he’s doing right now is obviously on a level that has never been seen before. To pass Michael Jordan when you’re still in the prime of your career, you know one of the greats of all-time: that record will be unbreakable.

Kevin Durant is still chasing that No. 1 spot, even if it doesn’t match your definition

Back in 2013, Kevin Durant was a 24-year-old scoring machine who had just finished another All-Star season for a 60-win Thunder team. Oklahoma City entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, looking to avenge a 4-1 series loss in the previous year’s NBA Finals to LeBron James’ Heat crew.

Unfortunately for Durant, an injury to Russell Westbrook in the Thunder’s first-round series derailed any hopes of a finals rematch. Durant carried OKC past the Rockets only to fall in the Western Conference semifinals to the Grizzlies. James captured his second title with the Heat, and Durant came up short yet again.

After the Warriors took a commanding 2-0 series lead with a 132-113 win in Game 2, James once again faced the music inside the Cavs locker room. (ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports James had been frustrated after being forced to wait for his turn at the podium, so he passed this time.) It would be misleading to say James was surly or unpleasant with media, but he didn’t have much patience for silly questions.

One reporter asked, LeBron, do you just feel this is a case where you just have to defend home court at this point?

Yes, that was the whole thing, and it resulted in a beautiful exchange, which you can watch by moving to the 34-second mark in the video below. James took a page out of Gregg Popovich’s book by making the reporter wish he had never opened his mouth.

Cam Newton: Super Bowl ring is only thing missing from my life

Cam Newton recently became a father to his second child and has been the face of the Panthers for more than six years.

With life going swimmingly for the quarterback, Newton told high school players at his fifth annual 7-on-7 football tournament that there is only one thing missing.

I am writing to request Mr. Floyd not have his court mandated requirements negatively impacted since he did not know the kombucha he ingested contained alcohol, Warren wrote in the June 21 letter, which was also to Vikings president Mark Wilf, general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer.

Floyd had reportedly tested positive for alcohol at least three times earlier this month while on house arrest. After initially denying the report as totally false, he released a statement through ESPN’s Adam Schefter stating he was unaware that the drinks contain alcohol after being encouraged by the team to consume them.

Floyd could face jail time if an Arizona court finds he violated the terms of his punishment for a December 2016 arrest on driving under the influence charges. He was sentenced in February to 24 days in jail followed by 96 days under house arrest but successfully petitioned the court last month to transfer his house arrest from Arizona to Minnesota so he could join his new team in offseason activities.

NBA free agency 2017: Clippers’ Chris Paul reportedly opts out of contract

The hits keep coming for the Clippers; now two of their top players reportedly are about to become unrestricted free agents.

First it was reported that Blake Griffin decided not to exercise his player option for next season; then came word that Chris Paul had done the same. Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times reported Paul’s decision Friday evening.

Paul, 32, has a player option worth more than $24 million for the 2017-18 season, according to Hoops Hype.

He averaged 18.1 points, 9.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game last season for the Clippers, who were the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference before losing to the Jazz in the first round of the playoffs.

The Jazz joined the list of possible suitors for Timberwovles point guard Ricky Rubuio on Tuesday.

Follow-up to yesterday’s Ricky Rubio story: League sources say Utah is among the teams to express trade interest in the veteran point guard.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that Utah have expressed interest Rubio and that Minnesota is still trying to trade the veteran guard to acquire more shooting.

“I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants,” Ryan said. “Plus, they were always the national game on television.”

Under legendary coach Tom Landry, the Cowboys had 20 consecutive Cheap Ice Hockey Jerseys winning seasons, from 1966 through 1985. Over that span, Dallas Cheap Ireland Rugby Jerseys went to five Super Bowls, winning two.

But Dallas hasn’t gotten past the divisional round since 1995, the last year the Cowboys won a Super Bowl. As Dallas descended into mediocrity, it’s only natural that casual fans’ feelings toward the team became lukewarm.

2014 NFL draft was one of the best ever, unless you’re the Browns

Conventional wisdom in the NFL says that you need at least three years to properly judge a draft class. Sure, giving out grades right after the fact is always fun. But there’s a lot to be said for waiting to see the players actually take the field before we can truly see if they pan out or not.

The Rams admitted their mistake this offseason, signing Andrew Whitworth to play left tackle. Robinson will have one last chance to save his career at guard or right tackle next year.

Nick Coomes is forced to perform nearly a full split to get the last out of the inning at first. Definitely not a good defensive outing from LSU, but it only results in one run. Florida can credit its 2-0 lead to LSU’s three errors.

ANOTHER error from LSU, this time from third baseman Josh Smith. Dalton Guthrie reaches, and Florida has runners on first and second. Florida up 2-0,

Gators capitalize on another mistake from LSU. Deacon Liput singles to center, scoring Nick Horvath from second.

Why he’s here: The All-Star Game might be in Miami, but this exhibition will be a celebration of the young stars for the AL’s best team, the Astros. Springer is the fifth guy we’ve mentioned here, and second baseman Jose Altuve (27) and closer Ken Giles (26) could make the squad, too. Worth noting that Springer has those 22 homers with all 70 of his starts as Houston’s leadoff hitter.

Game 3 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals was headed for another blowout

Boston rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to beat Cleveland 111-108 on Sunday night in Cleveland. Avery Bradley’s 3-pointer with a tenth of a second to play was the difference.

The Celtics were without point guard Isaiah Thomas, which made everyone assume the game (and the series) was over. Thomas is out for the remainder of the postseason with a hip injury that will be examined Monday . Marcus Smart took Thomas’ place in the starting lineup and had a huge game (27 points, seven assists).

Since then, he has not been able to work out for teams — he subsequently had surgery to address a stress fracture in his foot — but he has been continuing to draw interest from teams in the second half of the first round.

Jackson has been traveling to visit various teams with picks (or the potential to acquire picks) in the high teens and 20s, a source told Sporting News. Atlanta, with the No. 19 pick, had Jackson in for an interview, as did the Knicks, who are in the market to obtain picks later in the first round.

Also of note: Utah brought in Jackson, who went to high school at Lone Peak, situated between Salt Lake City and Provo. The Jazz have picks No. 24 and 30, and will be seeking guard depth.

We may see something similar to Durant happen this offseason if Chris Paul leaves Cheap Heat Jerseys the Clippers to join the Spurs, which is being speculated. San Antonio was one of the few teams that could have competed with Golden State, and adding Paul would dramatically Cheap Hockey Jerseys Custom change the landscape. Not only would the Spurs be stronger, but the Clippers, talented in their own right, would be weaker.

Bryce Harper, Hunter Strickland suspended for setting off Nationals-Giants brawl

He’s the most effective closer in baseball — he has converted 54 consecutive save opportunities dating to September 2015 and is 125-for-133 the past four seasons — but he’s made only nine appearances this season thanks to a forearm strain that’s landed him on the DL twice already. The only reason this problem isn’t higher on this list is his primary replacement, Brad Brach, has done a passable job in his place (10 saves in 13 opportunities). Still, Britton’s absence impacts the entire bullpen in a domino kind of way.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper has been suspended four games and Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland will sit out of six for their roles in a benches-clearing incident Monday at AT&T Park, Major League Baseball announced.

Strickland plunked Harper on the hip with a 98-mph fastball with his first pitch to the Nationals’ star in the eighth inning to set off a brouhaha that ended with Strickland being dragged to the Giants dugout by three of his teammates.

Both Harper and Strickland received an undisclosed fine for fighting. Harper was also knocked for charging the mound and throwing his helmet, MLB said.

The suspensions had been scheduled to be effective Tuesday night, but both players have elected to appeal. The discipline will be held in abeyance until the appeals process is complete.

Meet Anthony Gose: Detroit’s new 99 mph-throwing left-handed pitcher

The whole Cespedes injury thing was a bit of debacle from the start. The Mets’ best hitter was clearly hampered by a sore hamstring originally tweaked on April 20, but instead of putting him on the 10-day DL, the club kept him on the active roster and played shorthanded for a couple of games. In his second game back on the field, April 27, Cespedes re-injured the hamstring running out a double against Atlanta. The Mets finally put him on the DL a day later, and he hasn’t played since. The earliest he could return is early next week.

The Mets were 8-8 after that game April 20. Since then, they’re 15-19, and currently sit 8.5 games behind the Nationals in the NL East. Of course, Cespedes’ injury hasn’t been the only one for the snakebit Mets. Speaking of that …

Tigers fans may still view Anthony Gose as the bust center fielder received in return for second baseman Devon Travis prior to the 2015 season. But Gose is making a comeback at another position.

It was no secret this spring that the Tigers were toying with the idea of converting Gose into a pitcher. After pitching for the first two months of the season in extended spring training, Gose finally got his first taste of game action with Single-A Lakeland on Monday.

Gose, who pitches left-handed, would be among the hardest-throwing lefties in MLB should his transformation work.

Pitching will be Gose’s last chance at reclaiming his MLB career. The 26-year-old is a lifetime .240 hitter with 12 home runs in 372 career at-bats.

If Gose can develop a couple more pitches to go with his fastball, he could have a chance to help Detroit’s struggling bullpen.

Mariners honor late Chris Cornell by playing his music throughout Thursday’s game

The music world is mourning the death of Chris Cornell, who committed suicide in Detroit Wednesday night. He was 52.

That loss has hit especially hard in Seattle, Cornell’s hometown, where the vocalist and guitarist co-founded Soundgarden, pioneers of the grunge movement of the 1990s.

The Tigers edged out a tight 5-4 win against the Orioles on Wednesday, but star first baseman Miguel Cabrera was a late scratch with a new injury.

Cabrera, who previously endured a spell on the 10-day disabled list earlier this year with a right groin strain, is now dealing with a Grade 1 oblique strain.

Not good, as oblique injuries have been especially problematic in MLB this season. Though it usually takes weeks, even months to recover from oblique injuries, manager Brad Ausmus believes Cabrera will be back in 2-3 days, according to MLB.com.

If Cabrera truly is dealing with this injury, it may be best to put him on the shelf for a spell. The 11-time All-Star is batting just .248 this season with four home runs and 15 RBIs.

Obviously something to learn from, something to move on from. Don’t let it define me but really I think it was just frustration from coming off a really good homestand and really just not even being in any of these ball games, just coming out flat and not being able to build on what we were able to build on against Seattle. That just all came out in that moment.
